Shahrizat is new Wanita Umno chief

PUTRA WORLD TRADE CENTRE, Wed: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil trounced Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz tonight to win the hotly contested Wanita Umno chief's post, polling 507 votes against the loser's 280 votes.

This defeat for Rafidah, 66, may be the closing chapter to an illstrious political career. Shahrizat, 56, was her deputy for many years.

Rafidah is still MP for Kuala Kangsar but was not reappointed as a Cabinet Minister after the March 8 general election last year. Shahrizat, who lost her Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat, was made a Special Adviser to the Prime Minister for Women and Social Development Affairs by the PM. ---NST
