Censorship software already installed on over 500,000 Chinese computers

Several computer manufacturers have started shipping computers with Green Dam despite a last-minute decision by the Chinese government to delay its introduction.

According to the Chinese government, Green Dam has been downloaded three million times since the end of March and has been installed on 518,000 computers. Almost 7,000 websites in China have also installed the software.

On Tuesday night, the Chinese ministry of Industry and Internet Technology issued a short statement, indefinitely delaying a plan to make Green Dam compulsory on all computers sold on the mainland. The regulation was due to come into force on Wednesday.

The government retreated from the plan after fierce opposition from computer manufacturers, the US government and Chinese internet users.

Chinese web users flooded a cafe in Beijing yesterday to celebrate the climb-down. Dressed in matching t-shirts mocking the program, around 200 people cheered the unlikely triumph. "This is a very rare example for the government to suddenly push back an important decision the night before it is due to be rolled out," said Ai Weiwei, the artist who organised the gathering.

Once Green Dam is installed on a home computer, it links to a central database and automatically filters out all pornography and some politically sensitive content. A spokesman for the US embassy said they welcomed the decision by the government to shelve the project.

According to researchers at the University of Michigan, the installation of Green Dam leaves computers more vulnerable to hacking.

It may also be able to report an individual's web-use back to the Chinese authorities.

However, a number of major computer manufacturers have already started selling computers with the software. Sony and Lenovo, the Chinese company which bought IBM's PC division, have already sold Green Dam compliant machines, while Acer, the Taiwanese manufacturer, said yesterday it intended to comply with the regulation.

Neither Sony or Lenovo were available for comment yesterday. Chinese manufacturers such as Inspur and Hedy have also agreed to use Green Dam.

Meanwhile, HP and Dell have been sent cease-and-desist letters by an American software company warning them not to ship computers with Green Dam because it allegedly infringes US copyright.

YTL in RM3b broadband push

YTL e-Solutions Bhd (YTLE) (0009), a subsidiary of YTL Corp Bhd, plans to pump in almost RM3 billion to set up a wireless broadband network in Peninsular Malaysia over the next five years.

It will spend one-third of that in the next 12 months as it seeks to play catch-up. Out of the four firms licensed to provide high-speed wireless Internet access, it is the only one that has yet to launch its service commercially in a big way.

YTLE, which will spend RM2.5 billion on the network, is tying up with South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co.

The company will use its own money for the investment, managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

"We will start rolling out (the wireless infrastructure) immediately. We have identified 2,000 sites. We have mapped it. We know where we are going to put all the base stations already," he added.
Unlike its rivals which have launched their wireless services in geographical stages, YTL will commercially launch its wireless services, comprising voice and data, only when it has nationwide coverage.

"If you do it in stages, it won't work and it's not fair. This kind of technology doesn't work like that. It just won't work. Not enough equipment maker is going to support you. Not enough network people are going to support.

"And then you are killing yourself. How many people are going to have this experience? For example, I go out of Kuala Lumpur. I cannot use (the service) already. Who are you kidding? Just KL for KL? It's not right to me," Yeoh said.

When the government awarded the WiMAX licences, the four companies were expected to expand their network to cover 25 per cent of the population by end-March this year.

However, it is unclear if any of them met the target.

"At the end of the day, it's about achieving the national broadband objectives. Actually, our programme is ahead of the government's programme in terms of nationwide coverage," Yeoh said.

In 14 months, YTLE will launch its wireless broadband services nationwide covering 70 per cent of the population.

Yeoh was speaking to the media after the signing ceremony between YTLE and Samsung Electronics. Samsung has agreed to supply network equipment and handsets to YTLE.

YTLE is one of the four companies awarded the licence to offer wireless broadband services using WiMAX technology. The others are Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (a unit of Green Packet), REDtone International Bhd and Asiaspace Sdn Bhd.

WiMAX, short for worldwide interoperability for microwave access, is a telecommunications technology that provides transmission of data. It works like the current popular WiFi technology.

A WiFi hotspot can cover a radius of tens of metres. In contrast, a WiMAX base station can cover several kilometres. The technology also promises the ability to surf the Internet from laptops while in a park, on a bus during a traffic jam, or anywhere in a residential neighbourhood. --- Business Times

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd’s first multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), the Exora, was unveiled to the public in a gala event here yesterday.

Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the 1.6-litre Exora has already received orders of 2,500 units, even before its launch

The seven-seater - Proton’s most important model for the year - also marks the company’s entry into the MPV market, which is growing domestically and regionally.

It also represents the Proton management’s response to market needs and consumer demands.

The Exora’s interior is more spacious than other MPVs in its engine class. It also has separate air-conditioner blowers with ceiling mounted vents for the second and third row passengers.

Large doors allow for easy entry and exit, while the second and third row seats can be folded for a flat floor layout when carrying bulky items.

The vehicle has safety features like dual front airbags, pretensioner seatbelts and anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution.

The Exora, which is powered by a 1.6-litre CamPro CPS engine, was the result of an investment of RM450mil and 18 months of intense in-house research and development.

The MPV is available in four-speed automatic version, in trim levels of Mid-Line and Hi-Line.

YouTube Symphony Orchestra

The You Tube Symphony Orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Wednesday night. ---The New York Times

A symphony orchestra composed of 96 musicians from 33 countries chosen online via YouTube has won applause in New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall.

They ranged in age from 15 to 55 years old and came from as far as Australia, South Korea, Russia, Sweden, Israel and Cuba - with the notable exception of Muslim and African countries.

More than 3,000 musicians from 70 countries auditioned through the video sharing website.

The chosen 96 won a plane ticket and a three-day stay in New York to participate in various gatherings at the Juilliard School of Music and in the Carnegie Hall concert, directed by San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's Michael Tilson Thomas.

"This is at the same time a classical concert, a summit, a scout jamboree and a speed date," Tilson Thomas said.

Colombian trombonist John Wilson Gonzalez, 27, told AFP the concert was a "marvellous experience."

"It was unimaginable that I could get to play in Carnegie Hall, a mythical theatre where only the great musicians play," added Gonzalez, the principal trombonist of the symphony orchestra of Caldas, Colombia.

At his side, 30-year-old Manuel Ramos - a Mexican from Monterrey - shared Gonzalez's enthusiasm.

"I am a professional violinist but I do not play classical music, but rather jazz, gypsy music. But there was an opportunity to participate in the contest and here I am," he said.

"It's impressive what you can do when people get together like this. It's lovely," he added.

The concert program included works by Bach, Mozart, Villa Lobos, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Lou Harrison, John Cage, and contemporary Chinese composer Tan Dun's Internet Symphony Number One Eroica, which was created especially for the occasion.

"From the first rehearsal on Monday the orchestra sounded really good," said Pierre Charles, a 27-year-old French cellist, who also studies physics at Jussieu University in Paris.

"I was astonished because I thought it would take a lot longer to get ready," he said.

"The sound was right straight away."

Koichi Osada, an amateur oboist from the Japanese city of Yokohama, said: "This event will help people to become more familiar with classical music, even people who have not been interested in classical music."

Asia, Europe, S. America Biggest Conficker Targets

It's still not clear what, if anything, millions of Microsoft Windows systems infected with the much-hyped Conficker worm will do in the next 12 hours, when the systems are expected to seek out new instructions from the worm's author(s). If anything significant does happen, however, it will disproportionately affect PCs and networks in Asia, Europe and South America, and comparatively few systems in North America, new research suggests.

Researchers at IBM's Internet Security Systems say they found a way to decode the encryption that masks the data shared by peer-to-peer communications software planted on all systems infected by Conficker.C. As a result, ISS has been able to begin charting the location of infected systems across the globe.

According to ISS, only 6 percent of the known infections are located in North America, let alone the United States. In contrast, nearly 45 percent of infections are in Asia, while Europe accounts for 32 percent of infected systems. PCs in South America make up about 14 percent of the Conficker.C botnet, the researchers estimate.

Already in parts of the world, Conficker.C systems are polling a random 500 out of some 50,000 pseudo-random domain names in search of software updates or new instructions from the worm's author(s). Security Fix will have additional updates as more information becomes available as to what the Conficker botnet is doing.

The P2P communications method is a new feature not present in the first two versions of the Conficker worm, and it may serve as a backup mechanism by which the worm authors update infected systems, should the security community succeed in its efforts to prevent the registration of those 50,000 domains (the list of Web site names changes daily).

For the past several months, the so-called "Conficker Cabal" -- a group of security researchers, academics and policy makers -- have banded together to prevent infected systems from downloading additional components or instructions. So far, nobody has observed spam or any other typical cyber crime activity emanating from any Conficker-infected systems, and to date the hope has been that this is because the Cabal has succeeded in preventing Conficker A & B systems from not only downloading software updates, but also from updating themselves to the latest version of Conficker, which includes the P2P communications capability. Only machines infected with Conficker.C are in danger as part of the April 1 threat.

Holly Stewart, threat response manager for X-Force, ISS's research arm, said the company isn't ready to release estimates of the number of systems infected with Conficker.C because it is still gathering data on that front (researchers have estimated that at least 12 million PCs have been infected with the first two versions of the worm). But she said there are signs that at least some percentage of Conficker A & B systems were successfully updated to this latest version.

"Conficker A & B versions used any method they could to spread to as many machines as fast as possible, but we're not seeing much activity at all from those systems anymore" Stewart said. Conficker.C systems don't appear to be spreading either, Stewart said, but they are quite chatty with one another via the P2P mechanism.

"For now [the Conficker.C botnet] is just holding the fort and keeping the lines of communications open," Stewart said.

REMOVAL TOOLS

One thing to note: Conficker blocks infected machines from running removal tools with "Conficker" in the name. So users might have to change the name of the file (one you've saved the tool to your desktop, right-click on it and select "rename") before running it. The program's instructions will let you know if you need to do this. Many antivirus vendors have already changed the names in their removal tools — in some cases calling the file a misspelled variant of "Conficker" — to trick the worm into letting the program run.

Businesses have a bigger challenge, because Conficker has yet another method for evading detection. Once the worm is inside a machine, it applies its own version of the Microsoft patch that fixes the vulnerability Conficker exploited in the first place. So a business running a standard network scan, looking for unpatched machines, might come up empty-handed, even though some computers on the network are infected.

The scans need to take a deeper dive into the machines on the network — something an antivirus vendor's service should enable. For government agencies, contractors and operators of critical infrastructure, the Department of Homeland Security also has released a network-detection tool for Conficker. ---( quoted from : bultimoresun.com)

Google blocks UK from YouTube music videos

Google is blocking UK access to music videos on YouTube because of a licensing row with the Performing Rights Society (PRS).

According to Google, licensing negotiations for the UK stalled because of "prohibitive licensing fees" and a "lack of transparency".

Google described the move as a "painful decision", but said the PRS had ramped up the cost of licensing and was unwilling to disclose what songs were included in the proposed deal.

Patrick Walker, EMEA director of video partnerships at Google, said the company would block music videos in the UK until mutually acceptable terms were reached.

The PRS said it was "outraged on behalf of consumers and songwriters" by Google's action.

"This action has been taken without any consultation with PRS and in the middle of negotiations between the two parties," the royalty collection group said in a statement.

PRS has called on Google to reconsider the decision as a matter of urgency.

Steve Porter, chief executive at PRS, said, "[Google's action] only punishes British consumers and the songwriters, whose interests we protect and represent."

Twitter hit by porno spammers

Spammers have created 750 accounts on Twitter which are being used to lure users to websites containing explicit sexual content.

According to IT security company Sophos, the messages, which are being spammed out as Tweets, resemble the following: "hey! 23/Female. Come chat with me on my webcam thingy here" followed by a link to the Chatwebcamfree website."

Sophos found that the index page of this website serves up obfuscated JavaScript that loads a variety of pornographic adverts and contains a web form directed to a site called eroticgateway.com.

"If a hacker has managed to ascertain your Twitter password then there is a chance that they may have compromised your system in other ways too," warned Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

"We are seeing more and more attacks from spammers, phishers, malware authors, scammers and identity thieves against users of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook - similar adult webcam messages were spotted on Facebook just last month. These are not just proof-of-concept attacks in controlled conditions - they are everyday full-blooded assaults making money out of real people," he said. (Souce: ComputerWeekly.com)

There is a new rape alarm from lla Dusk, designed to sound like a woman's scream. It comes in a range of pretty designs and small enough to attach to your key chain or pop in your clutch bag. My question is , how many female will try and get one? The other thing is, if people heard the scream, do they alert that there is a scream which need your help?

I am standing in a quiet London street, just off a busy market, and nobody is coming to help me. The personal attack alarm I have set off screeches away into a void of nothingness. The makers of the new Ila Dusk personal alarm, which goes on sale in Marks & Spencer next month, say that the noise it makes has been "shown to elicit the strongest reaction from passers by". Instead of the usual car-alarm noise, which people find easy to ignore, it is supposed to sound like a woman screaming. Except it doesn't. It sounds a bit like a baby crying, or a wounded animal.

"There is no point using an alarm to attract attention," says Jo Walker, spokeswoman for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the personal safety campaign group. "There may not be anyone around to help you. The main purpose of an alarm is to be like 'aural mace'. If you direct the alarm into an attacker's ear, it can make them slightly nauseous or dizzy and disorientated, giving you a few seconds to get away."

What does she think of an alarm which gives off the sound of a woman screaming? "We advise people to try not to scream, because bystanders have no idea how to react. You should shout instructions, such as, 'Call the police!' - it has been proven this has more of an effect."

Remember we said want to form a USQ-Ipohan group?? Jason created a social network in Ning.com. We just want to try it out see how it works. He named this social network as 'Ipoh Virgin'. I was puzzled when i first see the invitation mail . I thought it is a spam or virus thingy. My question to Jason, 'Why you gave this name?' He said just simply put a name for testing or what. Ok. Silent again...

After double check with him, this is the invitation mail that he sent. Then i register as a new member. After that, I try to invite Hera and Seng to join this USQclub.Ning. Both of them also have the same question 'Why called it Ipoh virgin? ' ahaha. See! Normal people will think of this, the name is soooooo it's just soooooo , weird. I just run out of word to describe this. You know how abnormal person will think of?

Maxis mobile network failure?

Since last evening, Maxis mobile network unstable in Ipoh. My family and some of my friends who are using Maxis could not make outgoing or incoming call. My brother tried to call up Maxis customer service center last night. The caller signal is very weak and ends up the conversation between Maxis's operator and him cut off in half way. I tried to call out today by using my 012... its can't work properly though. Whats going wrong by MAXIS these days?

Students interested in technology law and policy may be interested in applying to work with EFF next summer through the Google Policy Fellowship, a program that gives students the chance to spend the summer working alongside host organizations on topics of Internet and technology policy.

Much like how the Summer of Code project aims to develop and promote open source projects, Google is hoping that policy fellowships will advance debate on key policy issues affecting the public. Google is kindly offering fellows a $7000 stipend (for a minimum of 10 weeks in June to August 2009) for working with host organizations like EFF on various topics.

Google's application deadline is December 12, 2008. Take a look at a list of EFF's focus areas and find application details here. Students who are accepted will be notified by Friday, February 13th.

Checked out error in Mambo Server

User who use mambo server to host a websites may faced a problem called 'checked out error'. This could happen if your network suddenly terminated in the half way when you try to edit a post. Some days ago, I get into this problem.

Previously, mambo server from china / the websites i'm maintaining does not support Mozilla Firefox well. Some functions are being blocked by the browser. Due to this reason, i use Internet Explorer to do the update the server. Not sure what is going wrong with IE, sometimes it will turn off automatically. Thus, i do not have enough time to save my current update properly. Once i return to the dashboard using same browser again, the post that i'm editing is locked up. It prompt out the error message which the author have to check in for unlocking.

However, this action return failed because the post have not given a title yet. The title area is blank and even though i am the author also cannot check in. Some method that i found out from mambo to solve this problem. In order to unlock the post, you have to logon to the database using 'administrator'. Then perform the 'Global Check-in' select "System > Global Check In" from the Administrator menu bar.

Chapter 19: Global Check-in, Clean Cache

When a User edits a file, Mambo changes its status to "Checked Out". In effect, the file is locked and only the User who has checked it out has permission to work with it. This is a security feature that prevents two Users from editing a document at the same time, thus preventing loss of data upon saving.

When the User clicks the 'Save' or 'Cancel' icon, the file should be checked back in. If there is a connection error, or the user presses the Back button in his or her browser, a file can stay checked out, meaning no one can edit it.

A file remains 'Checked Out' until the User clicks 'Save' or 'Cancel', at which time the file is "Checked In". However, if there's a connection error, the user presses the 'Back' icon in his/her browser, or the User chooses another menu item without saving or canceling the work in progress, the file remains 'Checked Out'.
This means no one can edit this content item but the person who "Checked Out" the item or the Super Administrator. This is usually reported or experienced as Users being unable to edit or access items, and can be verified by looking at the column labeled "Checked Out" in the Section, Category, or Item file list .

If you wish to edit a "Checked Out" item, you will have to ask the last author who "Checked Out" the item to "Check In" the item or to ask the Super Administrator to "Check In" the item.

Mambo has a protocol, called "Global Check-in" that allows an administrator to unlock all files that are currently Checked Out.

To perform the 'Global Check-in' select "System > Global Check In" from the Administrator menu bar.

After performing the 'Global Check-in', Mambo returns a list showing how many items, and from which tables, were Checked back in.

Warning: Be very careful in doing this as anyone who is editing a document at that very moment can have his or her work lost.

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has ordered the Malaysian Comm­unications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to reinstate access to all blocked websites, including Malaysia Today, with immediate effect.

Instead of restricting access, MCMC will now use existing laws to prosecute website and blog owners who carry racist, seditious and sensitive religious postings.

In other developments:

> Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said MCMC has formed a monitoring committee comprising the police, officials from the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Home Ministry to monitor websites and blogs.

I have tried to set up FTP in Window Vista using default network location feature. Before that i have installed the third party FTP called File Zilla but i was stuck from the beginning when they ask for hots IP. Lets try out this if you are using Window Vista.

Aztech DSL605EW

I bought this Aztech wireless router from SNS not long ago. I follow instruction set WEP password and configure the DNS server as 202.188.0.133 , 202.188.1.5 , everything should be alright but i still have network limited connectivity problem.

The problem not only occur in wireless status, its also appears for using LAN cable. I run through those technical solution online, many people whose using this model also complaint at the same problems. The wireless, DSL and internet signal shown on router is green and lit but users still cannot browse websites and messenger are not functioning.

One thing is really funny which my QQ (one of the popular messenger used in China) still running. I even can have voice conferencing with others using QQ while the MSN, SKYPE and websites are disconnected. However, I am getting frustrated for on and off this router over hundreds time a day. This is the most silly and the only way that i can do for reconnect to the network.

Contractor Telekom

My house phone that struck by lightning was fixed this morning. Two young contractor from Telekom came and connect a new cable into my house. This two men didn't mention anything to us and just start doing the cabling.

Mom tried to concerns about what are they going to do with the line. When you see someone climbing up and down in your housing compound, i'm sure that everyone must asked how are they going to do with the cable, especially the directions and so on. Without answering, they just keep on pulling the cable and looked down to my mom. I saw all this and started to get mad. I questioned them, do you understand Malay? or you want me to speak in English? Are you Malaysian?

Then, one of them started to explain to me. They have to connect a new cable from tiang at main road to the house, it is going to cross over the top then link it in the house. They won't connect it along the road which like the way of old cable because the longer the line its caused the higher risk of faulty. I feel happy with his answer and thanks him for good explanation. The other guy who look down at my mom just now was a bit embarrassed.

This guy is very rude, he went over last time, this happening few months ago. When i was not at home and the phone line down like this time, he scold my mom 'Bodoh' when she tried to asked what their doing. You know what, I always think that communication with each other is an important issue for us who are living in earth. Telekom, a large and i guessed is the first communication service in Malaysia that first govern by the government. However, their contractor or some of the staff not even know how to communicate with customer. How can they be trusted with the communication service?

Anyway, after three days, the phone is fixed! Hopefully, the line is safe and stable.

Phone line struck by lightning

Last Saturday evening, there was a thunderstorm in Ipoh. Lightning struck on my house phone line. I was not surprised and already think of something bad might going to happen in that evening. This kind of tragedy always happened in my house. Almost three to four times per year, lightning will hit my house phone. It could be either the house phone in dining room or the phone in my room that i normally used it for connecting streamyx.

Whenever people try to make phone call to my house, they thought no one picking up the phone and actually there is no ring tone from our sides. Besides, we are not able to dial a call as well. I made a report to TM point on Sunday, they have this service guarantee where line will be up within 24hours. However, yesterday we waited at home since morning till evening, there is no one came to fix it.

After I finished job at noon, I received my mom complaint. Thus, another telephony failure report to TM point again. The help desk assistant said she found a remark, their technician had an appointment at 11a.m. I refused to said that we wait at home but no one came before. After that, she gave me a Celcom mobile number and ask me to contact Encik Raja by myself. It was a shocked ! Isn't it customer service is to help customer to fix their problem? Why they pass the job for contacting technician to the customer himself?

My mom is getting frustrated because of the phone line down for few days. Although there is another phone in my room, she feel uncomfortable and worried that some of her friends or sisters failed to contact her . Yae~ it is no surprise that my mom do not own a mobile.

Just now, TM sent a technician to check what happen. Without wasting any time, I pointed the tiang which linked those cable into my house and told him the phone was struck by lightning few days ago. There is no ring tone insides our house, but outsider can call in just that we can't received the call and of coz can't call out. Other than that, the fuse also blackout. He climbed up and check the cable insides and outsides our house. Travel with her TM van along the road around my house, climbed up and down...

After 1 1/2 hr. , he said something wrong with the cable... Tomorrow, he needs to find another technician to come over and fix that cable. Hohoho~ Whats an answer which make people fed up.
